I am not sure how well we are fairing in the «local people» denominator among foreigners, but as a local I don't always find people in Sofia very welcoming or friendly. The people in other towns are much nicer and hospitable. We fair greatly in the cuisine sector and the bigger towns tend to be very safe. A thing we can improve is the sanitary state of the country as a whole.

Festival of roses in Kazanlak in the beginning of June was very open heart and warm. Mountains surrounding this place were exceptional, people really helpful and smiling all the time. The food is great and cheap!

I live in Bulgaria. The best advice I can give to tourists is to not stay too long in Sofia and to visit Plovdiv, Veliko Tarnovo, and the Black Sea coastal cities instead. They have more to offer in terms of sights. Sofia is great for the nightlife.
