Venice is the most beautiful European city we have ever been to. The people are friendly and we felt very safe to just walk and walk.
Don't eat at any of the famous areas as it is very expensive. Get a weeks ferry pass, it is well worth the money. Take mosquito spray with you.
If you get to Murano, visit the glass blowers

Maples is a bit rough and there are many areas that you have to be careful of.
The churches are mind blowing inside and try to visit the underground tunnels.
We used it as a base for Pompeii and Herculaneum

Rome was immense but no matter where you turned, there was something amazing to see. I felt safe there and the people were friendly.
Don't go there during August as it is very hot and a lot of the shop keepers have gone on holiday.
The alcohol is very expensive and the food can be.
Visit the Colloseum at nightfall as there are lots of fire breathers and acrobats down there.
