Sandeman port. The city of Vila Nova de Gaia contains many cellars (locally known as «caves») where port wine is stored and aged. Port Wine was originated by the need to preserve the wine from the long journey from Douro Valley to Porto and then to England. Originally brandy was used to fortify it.
