If one is responsible and acts in that manner there should be NO problems with travel here. Like any locale in the World there are areas and districts to avoid. BUT, Do NOT be flashy with your dress or jewelry. There is NO need to be the attraction point. Avoid panhandlers and beggars. Keep your belongings safe. You would do the Same in Rome or Barcelona… Have a Great trip. The people there are very Warm People overall…
YOU MIGHT START WITH AN OVERVIEW. THEY HAVE A HOP ON HOP OFF THAT CIRCLES THE CITY CONSTANTLY. This is a great way to get an overview during or before setting out on foot. The Old Market, some of the Government buildings, the Zoo are just a few of the sites to see. Do a google search on things to do in Santiago… Also, you might find some day tours/trips available in the city or in the area nearby. Great Luck
