Visiting Zermatt … not skiing … do we do day trip or stay in City Centre?

Hi, together with my friend, we could be visiting Zermatt (30 Dec 2023-1 Jan. 2024). We would like to stay close to the city centre for the NYE Party, but accommodation costs are very expensive, and provide “ski to door” and “chairlift 50m away” so wondering if best to stay out a way — Lucerne or somewhere else/closer, and do a day trip and forego the NYE Party? Any feedback you can provide as to what would be best to do, would be appreciated. We would be happy to pay up to $300-$350 a night for accommodation, if we could find something not too far out? Your thoughts?

You could try some of the villages along the trainline from Brig to Zermatt, then the day trip from and to Zermatt is not as far as Lucerne etc like Visp or Taesch.

Luzern and Zermatt are very far away from each other, and two completely different destinations. If you gave enough time to travel to Zermatt, then go up further to the Gornergrad and stay at the Kulm Hotel Gornergrad. That is the most crazy fantastic experience in your lifetime. Not exactly cheap, but the 361 degrees view to the tallest mountains of Europe, makes it worth paying! It's absolutely eliterian and thrilling! To be one of the few dozens in Europe to spend a night above 3135 meters on New Year'seve! That's an insider tip…

We stayed at Hotel Banhoff which was still in town. It’s a hostel but we were able to get a room for two and a bathroom right next to our room. It’s a very cute hotel, very clean and comfortable. I highly recommend it and it was def under $500/night.

Try to search a hotel in a hotel finder as Trivago or other. There are a lot of small hotels in Zermatt village. If you wanna stay in a city, Interlake is close and have a fast train to Zermatt.
For goodness sake ignor the advice to stay in Interlaken. It's a messy and long journey by train with two changes at Spiez and Visp.

at normal times you could find a hotel for less than 200$ because the village has a huge range of hotels (check booking and view the map) — but I agree to year End Party there may be other prices. I have always been there in Summer visiting the landscape of Mountains by cable car or cog Railway up to Gorner Grad — so at least 2 to 3 nights will be fine if you want to see more. I recommend also Lucerne (very nice city) but too far for a day trip to Zermatt. If you have to stay outside than stay near to railway in Zermatt Valley!

There is lots of accomodation in Visp and Brig but I would try Taesch first as you then have the regular shuttles to take you up to Zermatt whilst Visp and Brig is about hourly and obviously further.

Back in 2008 we stayed in the Hotel Schweizerhof in the heart of Zermatt. we had stunning views of the Matterhorn from our balcony

We loved the village and stayed there, but we visited in spring. You could sight see and do spas.

This was also during NYE
