Sri Lanka? Easy to visit as independent traveller?

Trying to organise my next holiday and saw a tour for Sri Lanka, but I am not one for bus tours really, so wondering how easy is it to visit Sri Lanka as an independent traveller, and how easy and safe is it to get around the island? Thinking 3 weeks, not sure if that long enough, and would be willing to consider other options in the Asia Pacific area. Did Europe last year, so thinking this year closer to home (Australia) and then next year again Europe. Your thoughts?

I went Independently I went into a local travel agent who could provide a private car and driver to take you to the highlights. When I mentioned this at the guesthouse they arranged an alternative which I used to visit many of the cultural sites until Kandy from there I went up into the hills by train before heading back south as I was doing some Scuba Diving. But the original Agent itinery included the hills and stay in the national park famous for Tigers. I just flew into Colombo and first went to stay at the Negombo beach area which is not too far from the airport. Just went into the shop when I got there no preplanning but you will find everyone has a friend or relative who can arrange a trip. Did not prearrange as my female friend had just sorted it once there so I did the same. Mine was a little different as I wanted to encorporate some diving in the South and West but quite often you can find an local agency online which can provide a similar faiclity. I arranged similar trips online in both Nepal and Mongolia both of which worked out well.
