Feldkirch or Liechenstein or Triesenberg?

Travelling from Innsbruck to Lucerne, and looking for a stop (2 days) in between. Travelling in the height of winter so thinking lots of snow, and may have to carry a backpack, rather than drag a suitcase?

Looked at staying in Triesenberg, but that “appears” to be out of the way a bit, and we are using public transport.

What about Feldkirch? Is that worth a 1-2 day visit?

Or is there another Austrian town that you could recommend?

We are in our 60s and 70s, and relatively fit, so happy to walk with luggage for a kilometre or so, or take a taxi if available.

Would like a place with a bit to see and do … not big hikers, preferring relaxed walking, walking the old towns etc.

Any thoughts, ideas? We would be there in late December.

Or do we just extend our trip in Innsbruck and Lucerne by a day each side, going from 2 to 3 days in each spot?

Thanks so much for taking the time to help us out.

It largely depends how you travel. By train would be easiest albeit not direct. The area around the lake of Constance is full of historic sites with cities like Feldkirch and their alpine-mediterranean houses with arcades in its center, Bregenz situated directly at the lake of Constance famous for Wagner Bregenz festival, St. Gallen with one of the most famous libraries worldwide (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abbey_library_of_Saint_Gall), Zürich with a unique art museum, the FIFA or world football museum, a collection of succulent plants as nowhere on earth etc., then to Lucerne.

Actually I think to stay two days in such places it could be a little boring. Above all if it's snowing and it's difficult to walk outside.
I suggest you to think about Bregenz or, better in my opinion, Lindau on the Constance lake. you can do a beautiful trip by bus on the lake shores up to Meersburg and than take a ferry to join Constance. Don't forget to go to Schaffhausen to watch the bespoken Rheinfalls. Spectacular!
From there, by train, you can go easily to Lucerne. If you go there before Dec. 8th you'll find everywhere Xmas Markets (Weinachtenmarkt). Actually it's not the best place (you should go to Bayern, Nurnberg), but you can have a idea of what they mean.
If you have longer time I suggest you to stop in Bern (better than Zurich) or Luzern to breath a sniff of Swiss atmosphere.
Anyway a very good travel. Have a nice trip

We stayed one night Feldkirch. That could be enough. But I would recommend to travel further to Liechtenstein. There is direct bus from Feldkirch to Vaduz, that starts from train station. Regarding Triesenberg — really nice place to enjoy Mountain View’s. You can use bus as well. Regarding snow — in 2021 we saw snow only on the mountains)

Triesenberg is a bit out of the way especially in winter rather than visiting Feldkirch I would do your Innsbruck Luzern suggestion. Great publick transport and lots of nice villages in the surroundings.
St.Gallen and Appenzell are also nice alternatives

You may be surprised how easy it is to travel around even with public transport in winter. Many good suggestions in the other comments.

I’d definitely travel onwards to Bern if that’s not included in your plans already. Liechtenstein is Nice if you want to tick a country, but not that scenic. St Gallen is beautiful and walkable as well.

Actually traveling straight to Lucerne would be smart and take day trips from there is doable (to Bern for example).

In winter and relying on puplic transport I would opt for a more en-route option.
